Are you at risk? What you can do! You might be at risk for diabetes if you are Latino and you check any of the following : I am overweightweight I do not exercise regularly I am 45 years of age or older I have a family history of diabetes I am a woman who has had a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth Get regular check ups from your doctor. Ask them to check for diabetes. That’s the only way to know for sure. Losing weight is the best way to prevent diabetes. There are things you can do to help you lose weight and create a healthier lifestyle for you and your family: MOVE IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT • Be active most days of the week • Get together as a family and dance at home to your favorite songs • Make time to take a long walk with your spouse, friend, children or other loved one SHAKE UP THE FLAVOR • Choose baked, broiled, grilled or poached foods instead of fried foods. • Eat a salad or steamed vegetables with all your meals; it’s a tasty way to make any meal healthier. • Try fruit for dessert. • Choose small portions of starchy foods like rice or tortillas. • Cut back on regular soda and juice; have water or try caloriefree drinks.
