“The nature of questions being asked and the perspectives being engaged are often a function of the diversity of experiences and outlooks of those participating. . . . We must ensure that our scholarly community is composed of a rich mix of individuals who, through their own distinctive viewpoints, contribute to the intellectually challenging culture of the University.” —University of Chicago President Robert J. Zimmer’s Statement on Diversity S A L U D O S H I S P A N O S The University of Chicago is a community of exceptional students and scholars who are eager to explore, experiment, challenge themselves intellectually, and take an active role in driving the direction and focus of their education. Founded in 1890, UChicago is a world leader in higher education and research, boasting nearly 90 Nobel laureates and a rich history of academic freedom and open inquiry. Trumping social conventions and embracing wide-ranging perspectives, UChicago is the birthplace of world-changing insights and discoveries. UChicago scholars pioneered the field of sociology, calculated the speed of light, and discovered the structure of DNA. The University of Chicago also awarded the first PhD to an African American woman and established the first minority scholarship program. An intellectual destination — in Chicago and abroad At UChicago, leading edge research is conducted in 140+ centers and institutes, including the Becker Friedman Institute for Research in Economics; Institute for Molecular Engineering; Center for Latin American Studies; and Center for Race, Politics, and Culture; and three affiliated laboratories—Argonne, Fermilab, and the Marine Biological Laboratory. Faculty, students, and alumni convene everywhere from our campus in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood to University centers around the world—in Beijing, Delhi, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Singapore, and Luxor, Egypt. Our students build relationships with new people and cultures in more than 50 study abroad programs, many designed and taught by UChicago faculty. And for over a century our faculty has conducted research in the field, discovering prehistoric species in the Canadian Arctic and operating a long-term medical study in Bangladesh.
